DIY Activity of the Month – Homemade Playdough!

Boondall Early Childhood Centre shares an easy DIY art and craft activity for your child this weekend!

This simple, 5-minute homemade playdough recipe is not only a great way to entertain your child, it also has a number of developmental, learning and sensory benefits! This open-ended activity allows your child to use their creativity, explore their abilities, build their hand strength and dexterity and even help to develop their confidence – there is no right or wrong way to use playdough.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (olive oil or coconut oil works too)
  • 1 cup of water
  • Food colouring, optional

Steps:

  1.   In a large bowl, combine all of your dry ingredients – flour, salt, crème of tartar.
  2. In a large pot, mix food colouring with your water first. Then add vegetable oil and mix together.
  3. Add the dry ingredients to your large pot and mix well.
  4. Cook over a low to medium heat until the dough starts to form and becomes dry.
  5. Once the dough starts to form a ball together and looks cooked, take off the heat. Let the dough cool down first before touching.
  6. Once cool, knead the dough for 5 minutes and then you’re ready to play!
